Both Australia and India have been British colonies and both the countries have been sharing political, security, economic, linguistic and sporting ties. In fact Australia’s trade relation with India dates back to 18th and early 19th century when Australia exported coal and horses to India.
In 2008-09, India emerged as Australia's fastest growing trade partner, with two-way trade climbing up 55 per cent at $21.7 billion. The energy and mineral resource sectors will act as chief anchors for strengthening the trading relationship between two countries; while emerging areas for engagements include biotechnology and communications. The country is opening five new Austrade offices in India, bringing the total to 11.

Australia’s major imports from India include: Pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, textiles and clothing.
According to recent reports, over 97,000 students have enrolled in Australian colleges, signifying an education export of A$2 billion. The Western Australian town of Australind (1841) is a blend of Australia and India.
